Charles studied portraiture in the National College of Art, Dublin. He has been painting fulltime since 1994. He divides his time between his studios in Dublin in the winter and Fennels Bay in the summer, with a six week break in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, in early spring. Most of his paintings are of local scenes for the tourist market.He has exhibited in the Oisin Gallery in Dublin, and mostly sells his paintings in the Atlantic Gallery, Kinsale, and the House of Drake, Crosshaven.He also welcomes private commissions. Apart from his more commercial work, Charles is sometimes inspired to work from black and white newspaper photos of people, sometimes children, from the third world. His paintings tell a story of the difficult circumstances and suffering of these people and also of their dignity.He treats this subject matter with great compassion.
