John uses his imagination freely. The subject matter is the sea in all its different moods The paintings tend to be abstract and the colours vivid. They express Johns deep emotional response to the sea.
The paintings have a 'Turneresque' quality, particularly with his use of colour. However his freedom of approach and energy establishes his work in a distinct class of its own.
He also undertakes commissiond work, mostly of boats.
