There were many shipwrecks outside Cork Harbour over the years, in the area stretching from Roches Point to Ringabella, and one of them happened just off Fennells Bay,
A French ship called the“Amiral Coubert” arrived at Oueenstown on 25-8-1915. She was a 2223-ton steel sailing ship with three masts. She had discharged her cargo at Cork. She then went to Passage West dockland for painting and bottom cleaning.
On 18-11-1915 the“Amiral Coubert” was towed out by a Clyde company paddle tug. She was in ballast bound for Albany USA. A strong southerly gale endangered the vessel, It was assumed that she would anchor but she carried on. The tow parted between Roches Point and the Daunt Light Vessel. Despite the tug’s efforts she grounded on the carrig rocks close to Fennells Bay near Myrtleville. Her forecastle surived until 1940-41 when it was removed by Haulbowline Industries for scrap.
